Can I get an Amen?

Last night was the first night of the new term with school. My schedule has changed a bit and now I teach both my classes for the week on Wednesday nights – makes for a long night, but it also gets all my “lecturing” out of the way in one night and I have the rest of the week to do discussions, grade projects, answer questions, etc.

The class I teach basically helps students learn to identify their values, culture, etc, acknowledge and pay respect to those parts of themselves, and then learn how to carefully set those things slightly to the side to make room for the client’s “stuff” and how to acknowledge & pay equal respect.  Then we apply that to good interviewing techniques and voila – Applied Skills.

In our first seminar, I tell them what the class will be like, what my expectations are, how I teach, grade, etc, and we start covering the overview of the class & dive into the first chapter.  My seminars are usually filled with a lot of interaction – laughter, personal stories, I even throw virtual cookies at students who get “the right answer.”  Well, I was covering all the aspects of culture (there’s a whole lot that makes up our culture) and one of my new students remarked that I was preachin’.  We all laughed but she was completely right – I had the cadence, tone & pitch of a good Southern Baptist preacher. I quickly admitted my southern religious roots & laughingly asked if I could get an “amen.”  Wouldn’t you know most every student piped right in with amens?!

I have fun teaching. I really do.

Amen.
