looking ahead
did you ever see Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade? yeah, remember that scene near the end where he’s making his way through the booby traps to find the Grail? the scariest test is the leap from the lion’s mouth. the leap of faith. of course, you realize there was support there all along – it was just camouflaged. you couldn’t see it until he actually stepped out blindly and didn’t fall.
when i was very young, i would watch the road from the backseat of the car as my mother drove. in central texas, there are some pretty steep hills. when we’d get to the top of one, i couldn’t see that the road actually continued beyond the crest of the hill. my worldview was still very concrete. i remember the terror of wondering if there would be anything beyond that crest or if we would plummet off some unseen precipice. i wondered why my mother didn’t slow down. when i started driving, over those same roads, many years later, i would unconsciously slow down to make sure the road actually would be there.
i know the road is there, but i can’t resist the instinct to slow down a little, just to make sure there’s not some gaping chasm just out of sight.
there are big changes afoot.
